ABOUT
Colour is subjective. Is your green the same as my green? Well, through my lens, I see the world a little differently. Discover the illusive world of infrared photography.
Infrared light is all around us, but the human eye can’t detect it. In fact, the visible color spectrum is only a tiny fraction of the full spectrum of light. But this tiny fraction is responsible for everything we can see. The way we visually perceive the world is by detecting light that’s emitted, reflected or refracted by other objects. But what about the light we can’t see? It’s still there, it’s still present, but we’re oblivious to it. In a way, we are only perceiving a fraction of reality. We are quite literally blind to the rest of it.
Infrared photography gives us a little glimpse into that other part of reality. Cameras work in a similar way to our eyes: you can create a photograph by capturing light. But, you might have guessed it, a camera is sensitive to a broader spectrum of light than our eyes are. By exploiting this feature of cameras, we’re able to create stunning, surreal images of the world around us.
But wait a minute… while camera’s might be able to “see” these other colours, when we look at these images we’re still limited to what our eyes can see, right?
Right. Thats why we have to do a little trickery. By capturing specific wavelengths of light, and shifting some colours, we can create amazing pieces of art. Trees might be pink or orange. Water suddenly turns into a mirror, seemingly reflecting all the light that hits it. These images might have familiar colours, but the scenes are otherworldly; giving us a glimpse into another dimension of light. In a way you’re now Alice, as you’ve entered wonderland; you can’t quite comprehend what you’re looking at, but the view is stunning.
With my photography I want to uncover these hidden worlds. I try to capture them at different places I visit, and locations I come across. These are my location files: a collection of artworks that reveal a concealed reality in the world around us.
So, Alice, take a look around…
And enjoy wonderland.
